hx unveils Portfolio Intelligence, as it aims to become the key pricing & underwriting platform for C&S: Jamie Wilson

Off the brink of hyperexponential (hx) announcing the launch of a new core product offering, Platform Intelligence, Reinsurance News spoke with Jamie Wilson, Vice President of Growth at hx, about the company’s new product and what key benefits it’s set to bring towards the insurance and reinsurance sector.
Portfolio Intelligence, which is set to be released later this year, is designed to empower actuaries, underwriters and executives with actionable insights to better steer their portfolios.
As Wilson explained to us, Portfolio Intelligence presents a variety of key benefits for the insurance and reinsurance industry.
“There are quite a few benefits, including portfolio reporting. There’s lots of rich, granular data that’s entered into pricing tools, lots of very valuable metrics that can be used to help figure out what direction a portfolio is moving, and this would help make it much, much easier for our customers to serve that data up to provide insight and analysis,” Wilson told Reinsurance News.
“Our customers can do this today, but it often involves lots of infrastructure that takes a long time to spin up. So, what we want to try and do is make that more seamless, making it easier for people to get the answer to questions like ‘what rate change am I achieving in different segments?’, and ‘what’s my portfolio mix shift looking like?’. We want to make it easy for them to dive into that type of analysis.”
Another key feature of Portfolio Intelligence is Batch Rating, which as Wilson states, “is effectively allowing customers to play around with different scenarios and the impact they would have on their portfolios.”
“So, in the insurance space, it might be playing around with limit curves or base rates in my pricing tool, and exploring what impact that would have on different policies, but leveraging that insight on portfolio impact to build an iterative feedback loop on changes to pricing tools.”
Wilson continued: “In the reinsurance space, it could be playing around with macro level assumptions across the portfolio to see what impact different scenarios might have on your portfolio. Effectively it’s about allowing you to experiment and analyse different scenarios and once you’re comfortable with the impact being able to seamlessly deploy them.”
Looking ahead, we asked Wilson to explain to us what hx’s long-term goals are for the platform across the next several years.
According to Wilson, hx is fiercely committed on making hx Renew and Portfolio Intelligence the pricing and underwriting platform for the Commercial and Specialty space globally, by helping to support underwriters and actuaries in making the best possible decisions.
Wilson said: “One of the other big things that we’re doing at the moment is we’re investing in making sure the platform and products are in a really strong position in the US market. We have customers using us heavily in the US already, but the US market is unique, especially when we get to regulated space, with a different set of needs, and so we’re partnering with a number of our customers at the moment on exactly that challenge: How do we make sure this is a truly best in class kind of experience?”
Sticking with the US re/insurance market, Wilson affirms that there is a clear need for Portfolio Intelligence to exist within those markets. As Wilson tells Reinsurance News, the platform will allow those across the E&S space to more quickly iterate on complex risk pricing, while allowing those in the Admitted space to more easily see dislocation effects as part of their filing process and iterate accordingly.
However, the need for better portfolio management is truly a global issue, and goes right across the global Commercial and Specialty space, Wilson explains.
“Greater visibility and insight on portfolios is a universal need for best in class portfolio management, as is the ability to iterate rapidly and see the impact of updating rates,” Wilson added.
Wilson went on to explain how hx hopes to see more artificial intelligence engagement (AI) across the insurance and reinsurance sector following the release of Portfolio Intelligence. However, he also stated that it’s been great to see how quickly the insurance market has cottoned on to the need for AI.
“I would say classically, the insurance and reinsurance markets have often lagged behind with regards to modern tech, whereas with AI, there’s been this recognition that we need to do something. But as an industry globally, everyone is trying to figure out, what do we do?”
“Everyone’s playing with different use cases and options. So, it’s going to be interesting to see how the best insurers really differentiate themselves in the AI space,” Wilson concluded.
